No and no.

Saurabh: In theory, a court should be able to balance the severity of the charges with the person's history to be able to come up with some way to convince them to come stand trial. If the court does its job well, few people will skip the country. (And if they do skip out, that doesn't mean they avoid all justice. In this guy's case, there are few places on earth where he'd be safe either from arrest and extradition or from vengeance.)

Saheli: Also, the court should be able to apply a fair bail. Obviously it's best for people who aren't all that rich (so they get moderate bail) but who know rich people (so they can pay it). But in theory at least, it's inherently fair -- it's set by a person who gets to hear about your economic resources and all.

Really? Isn't bail sort of fundamentally unfair?

...Um, won't he just skip the country, and thus avoid all justice? Bail is okay, but I'd consider some CIA asset right-wing nutjob whose trial would be a reasonable embarrassment to be a flight risk, no?

Actually I guess he wouldn't bother, since he's probably not scared of anything bad happening to begin with.
