After considering, while I think you're right to make taxonomic distinctions, in the end I don't think my distaste is confined just to fetishists and dressers-up. There are some species for whom "the good fight" is waged within themselves rather than against the necessary elements in the world at large. Perhaps you're right that this species is not distinct from that of vacuous trendies; I'm unlikely to draw close enough to play an effective naturalist.

My basis for thinking about hippies starts with Abbie Hoffman and Phil Ochs versus Jerry Rubin and David Horowitz. The former fought the good fight until it killed them. The latter affected the good fight until they realized that being a selfish, sanctimonious asshole is immensely profitable when you do it as a wingnut.

The characteristics of the annoying people you mention sound to me like the narcissism and affected asceticism of vacuous petit bourgeois trendies, who seek individuation through boutique consumerism. Those who can turn a buck on that, do. They'd be, and probably will be at some point in their arc, just as happy purchasing the identity of New Age fascists.
